I came across an issue where the Vmware tools on my Server 2012 File server stopped working, after I enabled 3-D acceleration everything worked as normal.
Please note this should only be done if the 3D support Icon is grayed out.
Enabling Accelerated 3-D for a Virtual Machine:
To enable a virtual machine for accelerated 3-D
Add the following to theconfiguration (.vmx) file for the virtual machine:
mks.enable3d = TRUE
